Apply for a Youth Pass

Before You Begin

  1. Review eligibility guidelines
  2. Gather required documents

You'll need to upload one document from each category:

  • Proof of age
    • Birth certificate
    • Photo ID (driver's license, state ID, learner's permit, passport, school ID, etc.)
    • Visa, residency, or immigration document
    • A notarized affidavit from a parent or legal guardian
  • Proof of address
    • Photo ID (driver's license, state ID, learner's permit, etc.)
    • Utility or phone bill
    • Signed lease agreement
    • Bank statement, W2, or pay stub
    • Official school transcript, proof of enrollment, or tuition bill for current year
  • Proof of enrollment in a partner program , if you are 18 or older
    • Program card (MassHealth, SNAP, WIC, etc.)
    • Enrollment letter (Head Start, Fuel Assistance, Year Up, Roca, etc.)
    • Screenshot from DTA Connect app or website (SNAP, EAEDC, etc.)
    • Other document (Housing Authority lease, Section 8/MRVP voucher, financial aid award letter through MASSGrant, etc.)

Boston and Somerville Public School students may be eligible for a reduced fare Student CharlieCard that comes pre-loaded with monthly passes. Before applying for a Youth Pass, contact your school. Learn more about the Student CharlieCard Program (M7 or S-Card)

Getting Your Card

Have stored value or a pass on your old card?

If you choose to receive your card by mail, any value or pass on your old card will be transferred automatically to your new card.

If you choose in person pick up, you must pick up your new card from your local Youth Pass office. Next, you will need to visit the CharlieCard Store to transfer any value or pass from your old card to your new card. View CharlieCard Store hours

Providing your information is optional and does not change your eligibility for a Youth Pass. Any information you choose to share will be used by the MBTA staff for research and outreach efforts.
